Definition of Indigenous Medicine

Indigenous/Traditional Medicine

Indigenous Medicine, often referred to as Traditional Medicine,  is the sum total of the knowledge, skills, and practices based on the theories, beliefs, and experiences indigenous to different cultures.  Whether explicable or not, they are used in the maintenance of health as well as in the prevention, diagnosis, improvement or treatment of illness.

World Health Organization, Retrieved 30 January, 2013

Indigenous medicines consist of whole healing systems from a particular region or culture's traditional practices.  The healing systems are not simplistic, and often include extensive models of theory and practice acquired over centuries of knowledge acquisition. Indigenous Medicine characteristically may give equal attention to body, mind and spirit.
